Renewable Energy & DER Management Platform

architecture

Executive Summary

An energy operator scaling solar, wind, and battery assets could not see or control its distributed fleet as one system. Renewable variability caused grid-compliance stress and curtailment; storage sat under-optimized; and there was no way to aggregate assets to bid into grid-service markets.

Tech4Biz engineered a Renewable Energy & DER Management Platform: inverter-gateway control, plant and BESS control, weather-coupled forecasting, a dispatch optimizer, a hydraulic-equivalent digital twin, and a virtual power plant engine, integrated with SCADA, EMS, and market APIs, backed by a reference DER controller.

This document covers the problem, the engineered solution, the reference DER controller hardware, operator screens, and measurable outcomes.

Problem Statement

  • No unified fleet view : solar, wind, and storage managed as separate silos.
  • Renewable variability : forecast error drove imbalance costs and grid stress.
  • Curtailment losses : grid limits wasted available generation without optimization.
  • Under-used storage : BESS not optimized for arbitrage or grid services.
  • No market participation : assets could not be aggregated into a VPP for ancillary services.
  • Grid-code compliance risk : manual handling of ride-through, voltage, and frequency support.

The Engineered Solution

A custom platform combining DER control, forecasting, optimization, and market participation. Four layers:

Generation / DER Layer

  • Solar PV, wind, grid-scale and behind-meter BESS, and distributed resources across the grid interconnection point.

Edge / Control Layer — T4B-DER Controller

  • Inverter gateway with IEEE 1547 ride-through and anti-islanding, plant-level active/reactive control, BESS charge/discharge control, and microgrid islanding/resync.

Core / DERMS Layer

  • Data platform, weather-coupled forecasting, dispatch optimization, digital twin, grid services, compliance, and a VPP engine for market dispatch and settlement.

Applications & Market Layer

  • DERMS console, forecast/dispatch, asset-owner portal, and analytics UI over REST/DNP3/OpenADR and market APIs, integrated with SCADA, EMS, ISO/DSO markets, and ERP.
  •

Reference Hardware Design

The edge runs on a reference DER / inverter-gateway controller engineered by Tech4Biz, presented as an engineered reference design for deployment on certified plant hardware.

DER / Inverter Gateway — T4B-DER-R1

board der
  • Control SoC — ARM + RTOS implementing IEEE 1547 logic with secure boot and TPM.
  • Inverter Interface — SunSpec Modbus to string and central inverters.
  • Grid Sense AFE — three-phase V/I with PLL, frequency, phase, and RoCoF measurement.
  • Protection I/O — anti-islanding with trip and reconnect control.
  • Power Relays — point-of-interconnection contactor for curtailment and disconnect.
  • Comms — DNP3 / IEC 61850 over 4G/5G or fiber; BESS/BMS link via CAN/Modbus.
  • Time Sync — PTP 1588 / GPS for 1-second telemetry and event timestamping.
